Three Winnipeg police officers facing assault charges

Constables Evan Fehr, Barry Knudsen and Tyler Rahn are set to appear in provincial court on May 15 for assault causing bodily harm charges.

Three Winnipeg police officers are facing assault charges after a man was injured during an arrest a year ago.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says an probe into the allegations has determined there are reasonable grounds a criminal offence occurred.

The police watchdog previously reported an off-duty officer witnessed a man allegedly attempting to steal a catalytic converter near the city’s downtown and there was a chase after the officer tried to confront the suspect.

The officer found the man and a fight took place before uniformed officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.

The man was later sent to hospital where he was found to have a fractured bone around his left eye.
