Scammers target Saskatchewan residents pretending to be Conexus Credit Union

Scammers are on the rise, and the Conexus Credit Union is warning the public about a scam in which fraudsters call and text Saskatchewan numbers pretending to be Conexus.

“Be aware of phishing. These are fake sites or emails mimicking real companies or people to steal your sensitive information. Protect yourself by enabling two-factor authentication, keeping your software updated, and reporting suspicious activity,” the Conexus Credit Union said.

Conexus has noticed an increase in these fraudulent calls and text messages. Scams mimicking financial institutions increase during the holiday season. Conexus warns people to stay vigilant and watch out for the following things during this holiday season:  

• Were you expecting a call? If not, hang up and visit a branch or call the Conexus Member Contact Centre at 1-800-667-7477.
• Conexus does not ask for your banking credentials, such as your password or a one-time password. If someone asks for these details, hang up immediately.
• Conexus does not conduct banking transactions through text message. 
• Be wary of links in text messages or emails. If in doubt, go directly to the source instead of clicking on the link. 
• Fraudsters use scare tactics to create a sense of urgency. Pay attention to methods intended to create panic. Here are some tips to proactively protect yourself: 
• Set up security alerts. You’ll get a text or email message when suspicious activity occurs on your online banking accounts.  
• Create long, strong passwords. Never reuse passwords.  
• Don’t search for the Conexus website using a web browser – save and use a bookmark instead or simply type in www.conexus.ca in the address bar. 
• Share this information with your friends and family to help protect them. If you or someone you know has been the victim of scam, report it to your local police department and to Conexus.
